Why it matters

Schools measure what is going wrong far better than what is going right.

Risk screening tells a school who to worry about. It says nothing about the learner who is steady, honest, contributing and growing. Thrive is the counterweight: it asks what a learner is growing into, and names strength as clearly as most systems name concern.

10

developmental domains across four pillars, answered by every learner in Grades 8 to 12.

300

Developmental Actions: six per domain at each of five levels, from individual to community.

500

advisory lessons in the paired Character Anchors curriculum, written for South African schools.

About the system

Strength, described
as precisely as risk.

Every learner in Grades 8 to 12 answers the LearnerLens Values and Character Index. Results are read as a cohort profile across ten domains and four pillars, banded from Priority for Development to Established Strength.

  • Ten growth-facing domains grouped into four developmental pillars
  • Two environment domains reported at school level, never as an individual band
  • A School Voice Provision companion scale read beside learner Voice
  • Item register, revision log and claim register published in the product

How it works

A clear, structured process

  1. 1

    Census survey

Every learner in Grades 8 to 12 completes the LVCI: 80 domain items plus two companion scales.

  2. 2

    Cohort profile

Ten domain bands are grouped by pillar, with environment domains marked as school-level.

  3. 3

    Actions selected

Developmental Actions are chosen at the right level: individual, classroom, grade, school or community.

  4. 4

    Curriculum runs

Character Anchors advisory lessons carry the same ten domains into weekly practice.

  5. 5

    Growth tracked

The census repeats annually, showing how the cohort's developmental profile moves.

Why it's different

Built to describe growth, not to sort children.

Two domains are not about the learner

Feelings of Support and Sense of Inclusion ask a learner to rate the people and the school around them, so they are reported at cohort level only. They never produce an individual band and never trigger an individual intervention. A low score there is not a deficit in the child.

Voice is split from provision

A School Voice Provision companion scale sits beside Voice, so a school with low learner voice can see whether the shortfall is learner confidence, school provision, or both. Version 1 summed the two into a single number that could not tell them apart.

Every action shows its working

Open an intervention for implementation steps and owners, a goal for evidence of success with measure, target and timeframe, and an action for the research it rests on, including effect size, sample and caveats.

The limits are published

The item register, revision log and claim register live inside the product. Where a construct has no South African validation behind it, the page says so.

What schools gain

What changes when strength is measured too.

A growth-facing picture of a cohort, not only a list of concerns
Pillar-grouped bands that leadership can read in one sitting
300 Developmental Actions matched to the level a school can act at
A shared language for character, values and voice across staff
Environment findings that point at the school, not at the child
Year-on-year movement in the cohort's developmental profile

Signature feature

Two of these ten domains are not about the learner.

Feelings of Support and Sense of Inclusion ask a learner to rate the people and the school around them. So they are marked as environment measures: they are reported at cohort level only, they never produce an individual band, and they never trigger an individual intervention. A low score there is not a deficit in the child.

Alongside them sits a companion scale, School Voice Provision, reported beside Voice — so a school with low learner voice can see whether the shortfall is learner confidence, school provision, or both. In version 1 those two were summed into one number that could not tell them apart.

Paired curriculum

Character Anchors — 500 advisory lessons. Ten domains × ten threads × five grade versions, Grades 8 to 12.

  • Zero educator preparation — exact wording and discussion stems embedded
  • Chunked to 5–15 minutes
  • South African context throughout: NSC and matric, RCL and prefects, subject choice, ubuntu, eleven languages, load-shedding, the commute
  • Thirteen lessons are marked sensitive — all of Resilience and three Support lessons — and carry trauma-informed handling, a pass rule, and SADAG (0800 567 567) and Childline SA (116) signposting in the facilitator note
